Physical Therapy for Hip

Hip conditions and injuries are quite common but are also very difficult to live with. They can prevent a patient from being able to live a normal life or participate in physical activities like sports or playing with their kids. Physical therapists guide a patient through movements and exercises that can ease the pain and allow them to be more active. Our PTs increase a patients’ confidence and encourage them to keep moving throughout the rehabilitation process. It can also educate a patient on how to progress even after physical therapy treatment has ended and helps them prevent reinjuring themselves. Seeing a physical therapist is one of the best solutions for any kind of hip pain.

Common Causes of Hip Pain

There are two main types of hip pain. Some hip pain is felt on the inside of your hip which is typically caused by problems within the hip joint. When pain is felt on the outer area of the hip and butt it is typically a sign of a problem with the hip tendons or muscles. The hip commonly experiences a great deal of strain and the constant use of the hip can result in a breakdown of the bone or cartilage. Oftentimes sports or extreme physical activity can cause tears or strains on the tendons and muscles within the hip. Arthritis is also a very common cause of hip pain and should be treated to prevent the possibility of surgery.

Exercises for Relieving Hip Discomfort

While hip pain may make you want to stay in bed or reduce all activity, it is important to exercise and stay moving to prevent stiffness and ensure the pain does not worsen. Simple exercises like bridging and hip rotations help improve range of motion and can reduce pain. Mini squats as well as hip abductions are also helpful exercises to keep you active and improve hip conditions. Swimming is also an excellent way to stay active with a hip condition and it increases range of motion and mobility.

When to See a Physical Therapist

If left untreated, some hip conditions can worsen to the point that they need surgery. If your pain is constant and cannot be treated with ice or anti-inflammatories, you should see a physical therapist. Come to Colorado in Motion to begin your road to pain free movement.
